At the offices of Dr. Steven Mobley, we’re happy to offer a variety of dermal filler procedures to our clients. There are several such injectable products on the market, all of which can help you achieve a smoother, fuller facial appearance in several different distinct areas.
Unfortunately, a number of major misconceptions have arisen over the years regarding dermal fillers, their uses, and their effectiveness. Let’s look at several of the most common myths out there about dermal fillers, plus correct them and set you straight as you’re considering your options.
Myth #1: They’re the Same as Botox
Dermal fillers and Botox treatments are both performed using injections, but that’s about where the similarities end – despite popular misconceptions, they are not the same thing at all. Botox is an injection that impacts underlying muscles in the face, stopping their responses to stimuli and the resulting contractions that generally cause wrinkles to form. For those who it’s right for, this is a very effective treatment.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are meant to add volume to various areas of the face and help liven up the skin. They can assist with everything from plumping thinner lips to filling wrinkles and improving the way old scars look. They’re even used to enhance the jawline in some patients. Many patients choose dermal fillers because of how versatile they are.
Myth #2: They Only Treat Wrinkles
We covered a lot of this just above – dermal fillers have a huge variety of purposes, and wrinkle removal is just one of them. But on top of their ability to fill in moderate or even severe wrinkles, they can also help all over the face and in several specific areas. Do you have sunken cheeks, for instance? You may not have realized it, but dermal fillers can help restore their volume and make you look younger and fresher.
Myth #3: They Stop All Facial Expressions
This is another myth that relates to Botox, as when that treatment was first beginning, certain unskilled practitioners applied it in ways that caused some patients’ expressions to “freeze.” But this is a two-sided misconception – not only is it untrue for modern Botox treatments themselves as long as you have a reputable professional performing them, we already discussed above how Botox and dermal fillers aren’t the same thing anyway. Dermal fillers have no effect on facial expressions, and will produce totally natural-looking results when applied by a trained expert like Dr. Mobley.
Myth #4: They Don’t Last
Many assume dermal fillers and similar treatments will only last a few weeks before fading away, but this also isn’t the case. Many fillers, particularly those using hyaluronic acid, will last from six to 12 months in most cases. Others can even last as long as five years. As Dr. Mobley about the average working lifespan of your filler.
